Getting started
- Open EdgeNotes. The first time, your deck fans out on the right edge of the screen with a welcome note beside it. Its checklist is a one-minute tour.
- After that the deck rests as a thin dark pill on the edge, with one colored dash per note. Point at it and your notes fan out.
- Point at a note to open it beside the deck. Click inside to type. Done or Esc closes it.
- Use the + button under the deck to write a new note.
Questions
I can't find the app after opening it
EdgeNotes has no Dock icon. Look at the right edge of your screen for the pill, or use the notepad icon in the menu bar. Opening EdgeNotes again from Finder or Launchpad fans the deck out so you can see where it is. You can also press ⌃⌥⌘N to write a note straight away.
How do I move the deck?
Point at the pill so the deck fans out, then drag the dotted button below the +. Slide it up or down the edge, or drop it on the other half of the screen to switch sides. Settings › Appearance has a Reset Position button.
How do I finish with a note?
Click the box icon at the top of the note to archive it. It leaves the deck but stays in All Notes, where search still finds it, and you can move it back any time. Deleting is in the note's right-click menu, with ten seconds to undo.
What does the pin do?
A pinned note stays open on screen, and comes back in the same place after you quit and reopen EdgeNotes. Handy for today's list.
Where are my notes stored?
On your Mac only, inside the app's own container at ~/Library/Containers/com.spencerstevens.edgenotes. The title and text of every note are encrypted, and the key stays in your Keychain.
How do I export or back up my notes?
Open All Notes with ⌃⌥⌘L, select the notes you want (hold ⌘ or ⇧ to pick several), and click Export. Choose Markdown files, plain text files, one Markdown file, or an EdgeNotes archive that imports back with colors and dates intact. To restore one, double-click it or use Import… in All Notes; a note you've changed since the backup keeps your newer version.
Does it sync between Macs?
Not yet. Your notes stay on the Mac where you wrote them. To move them to another Mac, export an EdgeNotes archive and import it there.
Does it need special permissions?
No. EdgeNotes never asks for Accessibility, Input Monitoring or Screen Recording access. The global shortcuts use a standard system feature that needs no permission.
Keyboard shortcuts
Anywhere: ⌃⌥⌘N new note · ⌃⌥⌘L all notes · ⌃⌥⌘H hide or show the deck. Change them, or add shortcuts for more actions, in Settings › Shortcuts. Inside a note: Esc or ⌘W closes it, ⌘] and ⌘[ step to the next and previous note, ⌘. changes its color, ⇧⌘⌫ deletes it with ten seconds to undo. In All Notes: Return opens the selection and ⌫ deletes it.
How do I open it at login?
Settings › General › Open EdgeNotes at login. It is off until you turn it on.
How do I quit or uninstall?
Right-click the pill, or open the menu bar icon, and choose Quit EdgeNotes. To uninstall, drag EdgeNotes from Applications to the Trash. Export anything you want to keep first.
